What is the Most Powerful E-Bike with Pedals?

In the realm of e-bikes, power isn’t just a number. It’s a feeling. It’s the surge you get as you accelerate effortlessly up a steep hill. It’s the thrill of cruising at speed, the wind whipping past as if you’re at the helm of a two-wheeled electric rocket. But among the myriad of models and makes, which e-bike boasts the title of ‘The Most Powerful’? And more importantly, how does this power translate to your everyday rides?

Strap in and hold tight, as we’re about to venture into the world of high-performance e-bikes, where watts reign supreme and pedals still play a vital part. I’m on a quest to discover the king of the e-bike jungle, the most powerful e-bike with pedals. Ready for the ride? Let’s power up and pedal forward!

What Makes an E-bike Powerful?

Looking for the most powerful electric bike can seem like you’re looking for a needle in a haystack. After all, every manufacturer tries to spin how their bike is better, but a lot of the time, it really isn’t. That’s why I decided to share my experience with you today – to try to dispel many of the myths surrounding electric bike power.

There are five factors that determine an e-bike’s power. I’ll explain each in concise terms for you:

1.     The Motor

The motor is the heart and soul of the e-bike. It is the most significant deciding factor to an e-bike’s power. The motor does the work; sure, it’s fed by the battery, but it’s the motor that does the work of pushing your bike forward, or assisting you to do so.

Electric bike motor power is measured in Watts. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the e-bike.

Comparing Wattage to Class

There are basically three classes of e-bike:

  1. Class 1 – e-Bikes that go up to 20 mph, and have pedals that work to propel the bike forward. These are pedal-assist e-bikes, meaning that the motor only works when you are pedaling. This class of e-bike is typically 750 Watt or less.
  2. Class 2 – e-Bikes that like class one only go up to 20 mph, but these e-bikes have throttle control that works independently of the rider’s pedaling. In other words, you can hit the throttle and the bike will go forward even if you don’t pedal. This class of e-bike is typically 750 Watt or less.
  3. Class 3 – Class 3 e-bikes go up to 28 mph and are, like class 1, pedal-assist. These e-bikes are referred to as ‘Speed Pedelec’ e-bikes. This class of e-bike is typically over 750 Watts of power.

2.  The Battery

Although the battery is not the deciding factor of the e-bikes’ power, without it, the motor does nothing and it ceases to work under power. So, the battery is important to the system in the sense that it controls how long the power might be sustained.

Fundamentally a higher voltage battery will spin the motor faster. Voltage needs to operate in harmony with the motor and the bike gearing (for mid-drive bikes)

Batteries are typically rated with two specifications, the voltage, and the amp-hours. The amp-hours tells us how long the battery will last, although it would be more true to life if they used wattage-hours instead. However, a simple formula can help us figure it out:

Watt-hours (Wh) = Voltage (V) x Ampere-hours (Ah)

This formula will tell us more realistically how much distance you’ll get on a single battery charge. I find amp-hours slightly misleading.

3.   Torque

Torque is a measure of the motor’s rotational force and it’s responsible for getting you up hills and other such challenging inclines. Higher torque is equivalent to higher power, but many e-bikes don’t share a torque rating, but rather a wattage and amp-hours that determine the strength and longevity of said strength.

Keep in mind that if you want a more realistic number, you may need to do some simple math and translate the amperage hours rating into a wattage hours rating.

4.  Design & Efficiency

Believe it or not but the design and system efficiency play a role in the available power. Design can affect the physics of the system, contributing to more challenging or easier rides. Similarly, if the system is designed with efficiency in mind, then you can have power for longer, like with a good battery. So, the system design and efficiency indirectly contributes to more or less power, depending on the engineering and system components.

5.   Rider Input

The last, and most elusive contributing factor to your e-bike power is your input. For example, if you pedal a lot, then you can have more power for longer. If you choose to pedal less and use higher assistive settings (or a throttle-type e-bike) then you will have less power for less time. So, rider input actually plays a role in determining the e-bikes power and longevity.

Similar to the Keteles, the Philodo is another fat tire hardtail electric mountain bike. It comes equipped with two 1,000 watt motors and a 48V, 22Ah battery. The Philodo boasts top speeds of 35 mph, so like the other powerful e-bikes I have reviewed, you’ll want to ensure you have checked your local regulations to see if you can use the bike on all bike-friendly trails or not.

So, if you’re a fan of full suspension, this is the wrong e-bike for you. However, the e-bike does come with a handy rear-wheel cargo cage, so just by looking at it you can tell it’s more of a city cruiser than a mountain bike.

To me the HAPPYRUN 1500W ebike looks like a Frankenstein monster made of a chopper, fat tire bike, bmx, and world-war one era motorcycle. It’s such a unique look I almost want to have one just for the unusual appearance.

The e-bike comes with a 48V, 18Ah battery, a downside compared to the other e-bikes I’ve already reviewed that have much greater batter capacity. However, with 1500W of power, you’re sure to enjoy yourself on this unique fat tire e-bike.

The downside, in my opinion, is that this is another 20” wheel diameter e-bike. So, it would ride more like a powered BMX than a powered road or mountain bike. If you don’t mind the smaller wheels, it’s a decent, if not weird looking, electric bicycle.

The Aostirmotor fat tire electric bike is a true dual suspension powered mountain bike; with brown camo frame and all.

The tires are fat 4” wide tires that work well on most terrain types. The included battery is a 48V lithium-ion boasting a meager 15Ah battery, so it’s a step down from all the others I’ve mentioned above.

The YYG is my favorite of the bunch for its unique look. Like the Happyrun, the YYG has a distinct war-era motorcycle vibe, wide tube frame, and it even has a cool leatherette triangular cargo bag that really adds to the look (and the features).

The four inch wide tires offer decent grip in most conditions, and the range is upwards of80 miles using the pedal assist feature (50 miles in throttle mode).

The downside to this particular model is that the e-bike weighs 92lbs. So, it’s a good thing it’s powered, because that’s a lot heavier than a typical bicycle. For an e-bike, it’s on the heavier side, but not the heaviest. I give the weight a C+, but the dual removable batteries bump it up to a solid B-.

The ECOTRIC 1,000W e-bike is a 26” x 4.8” fat tire e-bike that appears to be ready to conquer the downhill slopes. It boasts a massive suspension front fork and includes rear suspension, and even has seat suspension.

The manufacturer claims that the battery charging time is between 6 and 8 hours, so you can plug it in at night and when you get up in the morning, it should be at a full charge. This e-bike comes in at a grand total of 79 lbs and like others it’s equipped with hydraulic brakes.

The Ridstar is a small-wheel (20”) e-bike with fat (4”) tires and a 48V, 20Ah battery. The e-bike can seem a little misleading because they claim it has a 1500 watt motor, with rated power of 750W, but then they also say it has 1000W.

They need to make their mind up, but I would assume it to be a 750W. This e-bike is the last on the list because I’ve not ridden it, only talked to others who had. Others tell me it’s fun, but feels like a child’s bike due to the small wheel diameter. Watching the manufacturer video, you also get the sense that the adult is a bit too big to fit on the bike.

And his body armor makes it seem a little over the top, so this bike gets the last place on my list. Furthermore, the manufacturer seems confused about the total distance this e-bike can go. They claim it’s anywhere from 50 to 75 miles, which seems like a rather large window of mileage, so again, buyer beware.

I”ve mentioned how to determine the power of an e-bike via its wattage rating. Similarly, I’ve also mentioned how the battery is responsible for determining how long that power will last. Here’s a quick-reference e-bike buyers guide to help you choose. You will want to look at three things: regulations, wattage, and battery capacity.


Most states have adopted the 3-class system for electric bicycles. However, not all states have yet adopted this system. If your e-bike is a class 3, you may not be permitted to use it everywhere a normal bike can go.

For example, class 1 and 2 e-bikes are generally accepted anywhere a normal bike is accepted, yet class 3 are often restricted to road or designated bike path use. Before you run out and buy the most powerful e-bike on the market, you’ll want to consider local regulations to ensure you’ll be able to use the e-bike in the way you want.

The second important factor, after reviewing local regulations, is to choose an e-bike with decent wattage ratings. If it’s a decent class 3 you want, you should consider going above 1000 watts. However, if you’re content with 20 mph (32 kph) then you’re probably fine with a standard 750 watt e-bike (one of the most popular wattage ratings for e-bikes).

Battery Capacity

The third consideration is the battery capacity. The e-bike battery specifications are usually provided in watt-hours (Wh). The watt-hour is a calculation that takes the voltage (V) and multiplies it with the ampere-hours (Ah) rating. Ampere-hours is the measure of a battery’s capacity to charge. For example, if your battery is 36V, and has a 10Ah capacity, then it is a 360Wh battery.

Generally speaking, if you take the watt-hours, and you have your motor set to the maximum assistive level, you can roughly figure out how long you can ride at that rate for. However, keep in mind the other factors that play into length of ride.


At the end of the day, all e-bikes come with pedals (although you may want to upgrade your e-bike pedals). However, not all e-bikes are created equal. The wattage of an e-bike is the most important specification to review when you’re trying to choose an e-bike based on its power.

The general rule is: The higher the wattage, the more powerful the e-bike, the faster it can go. Due to this rule, the majority of powerful e=bikes fall into the Class 3 group being pedal assist and having higher maximum speeds.

Just remember that you will have to check your state or province regulations for what wattage and top speed you are allowed before you need licensing, insurance, and mandatory helmet use.
