Assembling my Mokwheel Asphalt was a remarkably smooth process. It involved the usual steps of installing the pedals and wheels, along with reorienting the handlebar to suit my riding posture.

Stand Out Features of the Cobra

The first word that comes to mind is value.  I’m not seeing any other eMTB’s that offer the standard features that the Cobra provides.  Full suspension and massive 4.8 inch wide tires to soak up and stick to most terrain. Torque sensing power delivery to provide a natural pedaling experience.

The 750 watts of power and 20aH battery capacity give you the confidence to explore a little farther with the confidence you’ll get to where you want and return.

First Impressions

Wow, this is a big bike!  With the box cracked open, you get a sense of how big this bike is.  The 51-inch wheelbase is 4 inches longer than my cross-country full-suspension traditional MTB.  Assembly only took about 30 minutes including the 5 minutes of getting it out of the box.

First Ride

That long wheelbase provides stability and comfortable tracking.  Of course, I tested the suspension within the first 2 minutes of hopping on by rolling down a flight of stairs.  The suspension did a good job, but I quickly realized I needed to lower the tire pressure (I was running them at 30 psi).

I like pedaling and the torque-sensing pedal assist system is the way to go for me.  The 750-watt rear hub motor provided smooth power at a variety of different pedal input levels. The throttle is always there at your left thumb to give you an added boost.

Comfort and Components

I like to first talk about the touch points and rider position when evaluating an electric bike for comfort.  The Himiway is designed to be a capable off-road mountain bike.  The style of this type of riding has a more aggressive body position leaning forward to maintain balance and control when on a trail.

For aggressive trail riding the Cobra is setup pretty well, if I didn’t love pedaling a traditional MTB on difficult trails, I’m not sure I’d change much.   Where I think the Cobra really shines is on the less two tracks that someone might find turning off into a forest.  For this, I’d like a shorter stem and some handlebars with a slight rise.  

The seat is comfortable, it isn’t small like a true off-road MTB seat.  Providing good rump cushion with adequate relief to comfortably pedal for a distance.

Pedals are of the cheaper variety which, I’ll eventually change to get more foot support and grip.  Read more about pedals for eBikes in this article The Best Pedals for Electric Bikes

Grips are the ergonomic style with a locking screw.  I love this style and the Cobra’s were comfortable with very little twist.

Cobra Components

I can tell Himiway put value into the foundation of the bike.  Full suspension, 750 watt Motor and a huge 48 volt 20aH battery.

The two-piston 180 mm hydraulic Tektro brakes work pretty well.  The 95mm travel Guide RST front fork is pretty good, the rear shock is tunable but lacks dampening and only uses air.

The rear derailleur falls a little short being an inexpensive 7-speed Shimano Altus running on a freewheel hub.

Range and Speed of the Himiway Cobra

After riding for 70 miles or so, I was able to dial in the fit of the Cobra, and felt good to do a range and speed test.

Cobra Range

How far to go?  Like I said earlier, I like to pedal and having torque pedal assist is a range booster for me.  My ride started out early on a Monday with the plan of having a coffee and bagel at a shop 23 miles away.  Totaling 46 miles round trip, and then riding neighborhood roads to run the battery down.

Seriously the battery dropped a single bar at the 31-mile mark (80% left) at 42 miles it dropped to 60%.  From my experience usually, once you get to this level the battery capacity exponentially declines, but not so for the Cobra.  I was still at 60 % once I got to my neighborhood.  From that point I stopped pedaling and just used the throttle for 8 more miles.  Total with a little bit left in the battery = 52 miles!

Max Speed

I unlocked the controller to allow a little bit more power.  You can find the code and process all over the interwebs.  On smooth flat asphalt, the Cobra tops out at 25 mph.  You can feel it has more to give but the software and 22-amp controller are limiting it.  With me adding pedal power I was able to touch 34 mph.

Hill Climb and Trails

I don’t live in a mountainous area so I can’t say I climbed 3,000 feet until my breathing became labored, but I did test the Cobra on the biggest hill in my area.

I’m guessing it’s a ¾ mile continuous climb with some steep “kicks” with a 30% grade finishing with a 50-yard climb on a trail that is more like climbing stairs.  (800 feet in vertical climb)  The Cobra easily climbed it with throttle only.  I dropped to about 11 mph in one section but I was really surprised at the hill climbing performance.

While the Cobra might not be cut out for tight, twisty single tracks due to its long wheelbase, it’s a dream on flowy trails. Picture this: cruising on a pine needle-covered forest trail that suddenly opens up to a sandy ridge. The Cobra handles it all with grace, thanks to its 4.8-inch wide tires and full suspension.

Where the Cobra Shines

If you love exploring dirt roads and two-track trails, the Cobra is for you. You can easily roll away 20 miles sightseeing and exploring forest trails.  Or if you want to “take the backroads” to a store or coffee shop and arrive in comfort, again look to the Cobra

I’m on a quest to discover the king of the e-bike jungle, the most powerful e-bike with pedals. Ready for the ride? Let’s power up and pedal forward!

What Makes an E-bike Powerful?

Looking for the most powerful electric bike can seem like you’re looking for a needle in a haystack. After all, every manufacturer tries to spin how their bike is better, but a lot of the time, it really isn’t. That’s why I decided to share my experience with you today – to try to dispel many of the myths surrounding electric bike power.

There are five factors that determine an e-bike’s power. I’ll explain each in concise terms for you:

1.     The Motor

The motor is the heart and soul of the e-bike. It is the most significant deciding factor to an e-bike’s power. The motor does the work; sure, it’s fed by the battery, but it’s the motor that does the work of pushing your bike forward, or assisting you to do so.

Electric bike motor power is measured in Watts. The higher the wattage, the more powerful the e-bike.

Comparing Wattage to Class

There are basically three classes of e-bike:

1. Class 1 – e-Bikes that go up to 20 mph, and have pedals that work to propel the bike forward. These are pedal-assist e-bikes, meaning that the motor only works when you are pedaling. This class of e-bike is typically 750 Watt or less.
2. Class 2 – e-Bikes that like class one only go up to 20 mph, but these e-bikes have throttle control that works independently of the rider’s pedaling. In other words, you can hit the throttle and the bike will go forward even if you don’t pedal. This class of e-bike is typically 750 Watt or less.
3. Class 3 – Class 3 e-bikes go up to 28 mph and are, like class 1, pedal-assist. These e-bikes are referred to as ‘Speed Pedelec’ e-bikes. This class of e-bike is typically over 750 Watts of power.

2.  The Battery

Although the battery is not the deciding factor of the e-bikes’ power, without it, the motor does nothing and it ceases to work under power. So, the battery is important to the system in the sense that it controls how long the power might be sustained.

Fundamentally a higher voltage battery will spin the motor faster. Voltage needs to operate in harmony with the motor and the bike gearing (for mid-drive bikes)

Batteries are typically rated with two specifications, the voltage, and the amp-hours. The amp-hours tells us how long the battery will last, although it would be more true to life if they used wattage-hours instead. However, a simple formula can help us figure it out:

Watt-hours (Wh) = Voltage (V) x Ampere-hours (Ah)

This formula will tell us more realistically how much distance you’ll get on a single battery charge. I find amp-hours slightly misleading.

3.   Torque

Torque is a measure of the motor’s rotational force and it’s responsible for getting you up hills and other such challenging inclines. Higher torque is equivalent to higher power, but many e-bikes don’t share a torque rating, but rather a wattage and amp-hours that determine the strength and longevity of said strength.

Keep in mind that if you want a more realistic number, you may need to do some simple math and translate the amperage hours rating into a wattage hours rating.

4.  Design & Efficiency

Believe it or not but the design and system efficiency play a role in the available power. Design can affect the physics of the system, contributing to more challenging or easier rides. Similarly, if the system is designed with efficiency in mind, then you can have power for longer, like with a good battery. So, the system design and efficiency indirectly contributes to more or less power, depending on the engineering and system components.

5.   Rider Input

The last, and most elusive contributing factor to your e-bike power is your input. For example, if you pedal a lot, then you can have more power for longer. If you choose to pedal less and use higher assistive settings (or a throttle-type e-bike) then you will have less power for less time. So, rider input actually plays a role in determining the e-bikes power and longevity.

So, if you’re a fan of full suspension, this is the wrong e-bike for you. However, the e-bike does come with a handy rear-wheel cargo cage, so just by looking at it you can tell it’s more of a city cruiser than a mountain bike.

To me the HAPPYRUN 1500W ebike looks like a Frankenstein monster made of a chopper, fat tire bike, bmx, and world-war one era motorcycle. It’s such a unique look I almost want to have one just for the unusual appearance.

The e-bike comes with a 48V, 18Ah battery, a downside compared to the other e-bikes I’ve already reviewed that have much greater batter capacity. However, with 1500W of power, you’re sure to enjoy yourself on this unique fat tire e-bike.

The downside, in my opinion, is that this is another 20” wheel diameter e-bike. So, it would ride more like a powered BMX than a powered road or mountain bike. If you don’t mind the smaller wheels, it’s a decent, if not weird looking, electric bicycle.

The downside to this particular model is that the e-bike weighs 92lbs. So, it’s a good thing it’s powered, because that’s a lot heavier than a typical bicycle. For an e-bike, it’s on the heavier side, but not the heaviest. I give the weight a C+, but the dual removable batteries bump it up to a solid B-.

10. ECOTRIC Bison Linked for More Info

The ECOTRIC 1,000W e-bike is a 26” x 4.8” fat tire e-bike that appears to be ready to conquer the downhill slopes. It boasts a massive suspension front fork and includes rear suspension, and even has seat suspension.

The e-bike boasts a 26 mph top speed and comes equipped with a 48V, 17.6Ah lithium-ion battery. Like other similar MTB-style e-bikes, the Ecotric comes with throttle control and the ability to switch the bike to fully electric, or pedal-assist.

The manufacturer claims that the battery charging time is between 6 and 8 hours, so you can plug it in at night and when you get up in the morning, it should be at a full charge. This e-bike comes in at a grand total of 79 lbs and like others it’s equipped with hydraulic brakes.

The Ridstar is a small-wheel (20”) e-bike with fat (4”) tires and a 48V, 20Ah battery. The e-bike can seem a little misleading because they claim it has a 1500 watt motor, with rated power of 750W, but then they also say it has 1000W.

 – 750W

They need to make their mind up, but I would assume it to be a 750W. This e-bike is the last on the list because I’ve not ridden it, only talked to others who had. Others tell me it’s fun, but feels like a child’s bike due to the small wheel diameter. Watching the manufacturer video, you also get the sense that the adult is a bit too big to fit on the bike.

And his body armor makes it seem a little over the top, so this bike gets the last place on my list. Furthermore, the manufacturer seems confused about the total distance this e-bike can go. They claim it’s anywhere from 50 to 75 miles, which seems like a rather large window of mileage, so again, buyer beware.

How to Choose a Powerful E-Bike

I”ve mentioned how to determine the power of an e-bike via its wattage rating. Similarly, I’ve also mentioned how the battery is responsible for determining how long that power will last. Here’s a quick-reference e-bike buyers guide to help you choose. You will want to look at three things: regulations, wattage, and battery capacity.

Regulations

Most states have adopted the 3-class system for electric bicycles. However, not all states have yet adopted this system. If your e-bike is a class 3, you may not be permitted to use it everywhere a normal bike can go.

For example, class 1 and 2 e-bikes are generally accepted anywhere a normal bike is accepted, yet class 3 are often restricted to road or designated bike path use. Before you run out and buy the most powerful e-bike on the market, you’ll want to consider local regulations to ensure you’ll be able to use the e-bike in the way you want.

Wattage

The second important factor, after reviewing local regulations, is to choose an e-bike with decent wattage ratings. If it’s a decent class 3 you want, you should consider going above 1000 watts. However, if you’re content with 20 mph (32 kph) then you’re probably fine with a standard 750 watt e-bike (one of the most popular wattage ratings for e-bikes).

Battery Capacity

The third consideration is the battery capacity. The e-bike battery specifications are usually provided in watt-hours (Wh). The watt-hour is a calculation that takes the voltage (V) and multiplies it with the ampere-hours (Ah) rating. Ampere-hours is the measure of a battery’s capacity to charge. For example, if your battery is 36V, and has a 10Ah capacity, then it is a 360Wh battery.

Generally speaking, if you take the watt-hours, and you have your motor set to the maximum assistive level, you can roughly figure out how long you can ride at that rate for. However, keep in mind the other factors that play into length of ride.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, all e-bikes come with pedals (although you may want to upgrade your e-bike pedals). However, not all e-bikes are created equal. The wattage of an e-bike is the most important specification to review when you’re trying to choose an e-bike based on its power.

The general rule is: The higher the wattage, the more powerful the e-bike, the faster it can go. Due to this rule, the majority of powerful e=bikes fall into the Class 3 group being pedal assist and having higher maximum speeds.

Just remember that you will have to check your state or province regulations for what wattage and top speed you are allowed before you need licensing, insurance, and mandatory helmet use.

While the pandemic spelled death to most industries, the niche but incredibly passionate electric bike community grew. There are many reasons for this, as some cities during the pandemic reported a spike in electric vehicle sales (i.e., e-Bikes and electric scooters) to replace the shutdown public transportation services. The question is, which one is a better fit for you?

At its core, e-mountain bikes vs. regular mountain bikes have a different demographic. Most people who purchase mountain bikes use them purely for leisure and exercise. Meanwhile, electric mountain bikes function as an alternatives to a motorcycles or to make cycling more accessible.

E-Mountain Bike Vs. Regular: Which One Is for Me?

Before purchasing which bike is perfect for you, there are standard protocols to know before purchasing. After all, they are a hefty investment not only financially, but their maintenance can be pretty draining. As such, a few variables can make you decide whether an electric mountain bike is better for you or not. Below, we list these said variables:

Terrain And Environment

An electric mountain bike is impressive for two different environments and trails: major, traffic-infested cities and incredibly inclined paths. According to electric bike manufacturer Keego Mobility, e-bikes, since they have pedal assist, can help accelerate you comfortably through traffic.

Aside from useability and comfort, the pedal-assist features help maneuver through demanding terrains such as thick traffic and angled terrain. Bikes are notorious for being particularly challenging to drive around in traffic. It is tough to control when to speed up and slow down on demand, especially if you are navigating through cities without dedicated bike lanes.

In Thick Traffic

Imagine this: the traffic light’s red, so you slow down. Now that it’s green, you try to speed up as quickly as possible. Because the acceleration in regular bikes is powered by you only, it can take a while to be in form and start cycling away. This phenomenon can cause the cars in the back to slow down.

On Hilly Paths and Trails

In inclined paths, the challenge is different, but the goal is similar: to push through faster. Have you tried cycling uphill? If you are not too experienced with cycling, this situation will be quite the challenge. The first time I cycled uphill, I could not help but stop now and then– as not only are you lifting your weight, you are also countering gravity, and unfortunately, wheels tend to favor gravity.

If you want to make hill climb cycling much more accessible without compromising the act of cycling itself, electric mountain bikes can help. It can help you add more cycling power while helping to motivate you to cycle through rough terrains.

Exercise

Theoretically, physical activity should be lower when using e mountain bikes vs. regular cycles, and for that, you would be right– theoretically. However, theory can only hold out so far. Traditional bikes should be a better option if you use your bicycle solely for exercise.

However, electric mountain bikes should be better when considering your bicycle as an alternative to public transportation or as a traveling medium. According to a study, electric cycles promote consistent cycling over conventional bicycles. Those with e-Bikes have a MET (metabolic equivalent task) of 4463 vs. 4085 per week compared to regular cyclers. (source)

The rationale is that electric cycling is incredibly convenient to its users and would substitute car transportation time with e-Bike cycling time. As e-bikes make you less tired and produce less sweat while maintaining a considerable amount of physical activity, they can be optimal and attractive for office to house travels and travel to supermarkets and schools.

Price

A few thousand dollars can go a long way with regular mountain vikes compared to an electric MTB when it comes to money. It is pretty rare to find an electric mountain bike near or similar in price to regular mountain bikes, as there are a lot of components that can add a hefty price to electric MTBs.

Chart low, medium and high quality

For example, good-quality motors and batteries that maintain a lightweight form factor can be incredibly challenging, causing sky-high R&D costs. Moreover, miniaturization (or making electrical components smaller) of said items costs a lot, primarily since most electric mountain bikes utilize semiconductors. As such, the components involved in electric mountain bikes can be sky-high. (source)

A high-quality mountain bike can cost upwards of a thousand dollars, even while scrolling through budget options. However, a decent build of an electric mountain bike, on the other hand, can cost upwards of $4000.

Maintenance Price and Repair

In the mountain bike vs. regular MTB debate, one of the things to consider is the ease of repair. Electric bikes are complex due to their added parts, such as batteries and motors. If you are familiar with electric components as much as I assume that you are, more parts mean more points of error. Electric bikes theoretically break down more than standard bicycles due to their complex systems.

As such, their repairs are also much more expensive. For example, most electric bicycles use lithium-ion batteries, the same battery used for your phone. These batteries may be efficient and store a lot of energy, but they are far from degradation-proof. These batteries generally last 2000 charging cycles until they completely deteriorate and slowly become unusable. (source)

Accessibility

One of the primary reasons to go with e mountain bike vs. regular MTB is that electric bikes are significantly more accessible than traditional bikes. Biking is an intensive exercise; it takes a lot of investment before, during, and after the said act. Mountain biking is generally appealing to only physically active groups or those healthy and young enough to aspire to be one.

However, electric MTB allows those not incredibly physically robust to take on challenges that would otherwise be not viable. Moreover, as said earlier, this accessibility can help promote cycling since the said act is incredibly convenient to a point wherein it’s not a hassle anymore.

Many people opt out of cycling because it’s too intensive an everyday commute option. However, because the pedal-assist feature of mountain bikes helps people breeze through rigid streets without exerting excessive amounts of energy, they can opt for cycling as a viable option for everyday transportation.

If you are physically able and want to use bikes as a medium of exercise, electric mountain bikes may not be for you. However, if you’re planning to replace your car, motorcycle, or any means of public transportation using a bike, or if you are physically disadvantaged, an electric bike is ideal.

Types Of Electric Mountain Bikes

Have you decided to get an e-bike? If so, do you know that there are classes? Which class should you get? Below we provide a quick rundown: (source)

Electric Bike Classes:

• Class 1: top speed is 20 miles per hour. This bike is a pedal-assist bike, and as such, the electric motor only works during pedaling. Class 1 e-bikes are allowed on bike paths and lanes, sharing them with traditional, nonassisted bikes.
• Class 2: top speed is also 20 miles per hour. However, it has a motor that works like a throttle, working even while not pedaling. One can use class 2 e-bikes in bike lanes.
• Class 3: top speed is 28 miles per hour. It May or may not have a throttle. These bikes cannot go on bike paths.

You Should Get an eMTB If…

• You live or use your bike in urban areas, especially those without bike lanes or in cities with heavy traffic.
• You use your bike as a means of transportation, as electric bikes are easier and more comfortable to use daily.
• You are physically challenged, in old age, or are not physically active.
• You carry a lot of load and groceries with you. Electric bikes manage and travel smoothly under heavy loads.

You Should Get a Traditional Bike If…

• You use your bike purely as means of exercise. While electric bikes promote regular exercise, they limit the amount of physical activity you can get.
• You cannot afford to dish out money for an expensive bicycle. Mountain bikes are already expensive as is. Electric mountain bikes can be more than four times as expensive.
• You want an easy-going experience. Traditional bikes have simple mechanisms, are lighter, and do not have a lot of electrical components that may break down mid-ride.
