How to easily derestrict Shimano Steps eBike with this cheap hack
More e-Power from your Shimano Steps eMTB with this simple hack
Follow this simple how-to guide to easily hack and derestrict your Shimano Steps motor system on the cheap. Works with E6000, E7000 and E8000 systems.
Important Please Read This Before Starting
Getting free extra power from your eMTB is the dream, but remember that there is a legal reason why certain countries have a speed limit on pedelec’s and if you do hack your eBike and you do get caught you could face serious consequences. Also, keep in mind that you may void your warranty and could damage your system, so please carry this work out at your own risk.
How to hack / derestrict your Shimano Steps e-Bike / e-MTB
Step 1 | Remove your speed sensor
The first step is to reposition your speed sensor. The sensor is usually held to the chainstay with either a small allen bolt or screw. It’s probably easier to remove the rear wheel to give you more access.
Step 2 | Move the sensor behind your chainset
To fool the Shimano Steps motor system into giving you some extra free power you need to position the sensor behind the crankset. You will still want to fasten it to the chainstay but further along just behind the crank close to where the pedal threads to the arm. The best way to fasten your sensor is with electrical tape so that you can easily reverse the hack in the future. Ensure that there are no clearance issues before finalizing the position. Important: Make sure the Shimano logo faces out toward the magnet.
Step 3 | Fasten your magnet
If you’re lucky you might be able to reuse the magnet from your rear wheel, but as they are quite bulky it’s probably better to buy a pack of these slim magnets to use instead. Again you can just use electrical tape so that you can reverse the hack, but just make sure that the magnet and sensor don’t touch and there are no clearance problems.
Step 4 | Enjoy a free / cheap power boost
Believe it or not, but that’s it! You have completed your eBike back and have now derestricted the power assist. Now for every rotation of the pedals the system will think that it is reading a rotation of the wheel.
